Charles of Orleans (November 24th 1394, Paris - January 5th 1465, with Amboise), Duc of Orleans is especially known by its poetic work carried out at the time of its long English captivity. He is the son of Louis Ier, duke of Orleans, brother of the king de France Charles VI, and of Valentine Visconti girl of the duke of Milan. He was born with the hotel from Saint-pol., in Paris.

Presentation

Its childhood is marked by the competitions which oppose his/her father to Jean without Peur, duke of Burgundy, competitions at the origin of the civil war between Armagnacs and Burgundian. His/her father is killed on the order of the duke of Burgundy the November 23rd 1407. In its capacity as elder, it collects the greatest part of the heritage of which the duchy of Orleans, the counties of Valois and Blois, and seigniories of Coucy and Chauny.

, he married in 1406 his cousin German Isabelle de Valois (17 years), girl of Charles VI, and widow of Richard II of England. This one dies in twenty and one years by giving the day to a girl. Charles remarie in 1410 with Good of Armagnac, girl of the count Bernard VII of Armagnac, large feudal of South-west, transferring the family conflict to the house from Armagnac.

With died his/her mother, the December 4th 1408, it inherits the county of Asti and some grounds lombardes.

In 1415, occurs the resumption of the war, Charles of Orleans belongs to the French Army continuing Henri V reprocessing in the north of France. With the rout of Azincourt, on October 25th 1415, Charles of Orleans east makes captive and taken along to England. Its release is conditioned with the payment of a ransom. There remain 25 years in England, years during which he develops his work.

Indeed, it is nobody to pay his ransom. His second wife died fine 1415, her father-in-law, the count Bernard VII of Armagnac was massacred by the partisans of Jean Without Peur in 1418 and, in 1420, disappeared her younger brother, Philippe, count de Vertus. Its duchy of Orleans is left without defense and the English besiege Orleans without very thinking of asking the duke, their prisoner, to open the doors to them; sit to which put an end Jeanne d' Arc.

It is finally released the November 5th 1440, against a ransom of 220.000 ecu S, representing partially the Dot of his new wife, because the November 26th 1440, at 46 years, it marries Marie de Clèves, fourteen years old, the niece of the duke of Burgundy, Philippe the Good, and the grand-daughter of the murderer of her father Jean without Peur. In 1447, it recovers its county of Silk and returns to France the following year to finish its life withdrawn with Blois. In 1457, the December 19th, whereas it is 63 years old, his wife is confined of a girl, Marie of Orleans, and, the June 27th 1462, whereas it is 68 years old, Marie de Clèves is confined this time of a son, Louis, the future king Louis XII. In 1464, it is again pregnant, for the third time, and gives rise to a girl, Anne of Orleans, a few months before the death of her husband.

Charles of Orleans dies in Amboise the January 5th 1465, on the way of the return, whereas it had just attended Poitiers with an assembly of the princes of Blood and the large feudal ones. He is buried in the church of the Saint-Saver in Blois.
