Charles of Aquitaine

Charles of Aquitaine (* 825 or 830 - † June 4th, 863), archbishop of Mainz.

Charles was the second wire of Pépin Ier of Aquitaine and his Ringart wife. He lived at the court of his uncle Lothaire Ier up to 848, when, hearing of the deposit of his brother Pépin II of Aquitaine, he spent in March 849 to claim the kingdom of Aquitaine. He was captured on the Loire by Vivien, count de Touraine, laic abbot of the Abbaye Saint Martin's day de Tours and was sent to Charles II the Bald person. He was put in the monastery of Corbie as monk or deacon.

It escaped into 854 to recruit an army in order to support his brother. He knew little success however and ran away himself at the court of Louis II of Germanic, which did it Archevêque of Mainz and archichancelier on March 8th, 856. He died on June 4th of year 863.

He was buried with the abbey church dedicated to Saint Alban of Mainz.
