Charles de Mayenne

Charles (II) of Mayenne , known as also Charles of Lorraine or Charles of Own way , was noble a French born the March 26th 1554 with Alençon and dead the October 4th 1611 with Soissons. It was duke of Mayenne of 1573 with 1611.
It is that which the history retained under the name of duke of Mayenne or more simply Mayenne , such as Henri IV called it.
He was the son of François I {{er}}, duke of Own way, and Anne d' Este, and thus the brother of Henri I {{er}} of Own way '' the Gash ''. He was first chamberlain and governor of Burgundy.
He accompanied the future Henri III in Poland. He took Brouage at the time of the sixth war of religion (1577), and removed Walls It with the Protestants of the Dauphiné at the time of the following catch of weapons. He was Admiral de France until in 1582, station which he lost with the profit of the duke of Merry, one of both “ archimignons ” of Henri III of France.
He becomes chief of the Ligue after the assassination of his Henri brother in 1588. He goes to Rouen, one rare cities which hesitated to rejoin the League, and obtains his support. He is beaten first once close to Chartres by Châtillon, the son of Coligny, at the beginning of 1589. With died of Henri III in 1589, it vainly tries to make proclaim king the cardinal Bourbon.
It was overcome with Arques (1589) and with Ivry (1590) by Henri IV. In 1591, it made hang the leaders of the Parisian Ligue who, them, had just made hang Barnabé Brisson, first president of the Parlement of Paris, thus sealing the rupture between the Ligue peerage-book and the urban Ligue. It failed to be made elect king by the General states which it had convened with Paris in 1593. The June 5th 1595, it was beaten by Henri IV with the Bataille of Fountain-Frenchwoman and made act of solemn tender to Henri IV in November 1595, in exchange of 2 640 000 delivers s and of three places of safety in Burgundy, of which it lost the government.
He had married, the August 6th 1576, Henriette of Savoy-Villars († 1611), and they had had:
- Henri (1578 † 1621), duke of Mayenne and Aguillon
- Charles Emmanuel (1581 † 1609), count de Sommerive
- Catherine (1585 † 1618), married in 1599 with Charles I {{er}} Gonzague (1580 † 1637), duke of Mantoue
- Renee († 1638), married in 1613 in Mario II Sforza (1594 † 1658), duke of Ognano and Segni, count de Santa Fiora
