Charles de Chambes

Charles de Chambes , count of Montsoreau, born with the castle of Chalain on November 28th 1549, died in 1621.

Biography

Ordinary gentleman of the room, chamberlain and large-huntsman of Francois, Duke of Alençon and Anjou, named knight of the Order of Saint-Michel on February 23rd 1568.

He became ordinary gentleman of the room of Monseigneur, brother of the king, baron de Pontchâteau.

He announced to the seat of La Rochelle in 1573. This load obliged it to live in Paris where his wife, whom he married on January 10th 1576, Francoise de Maridor, Protestant woman of origin, widow of Jehan of Coësmes was lady-in-waiting of the queen-mother between 1576 and 1577.

During the absences of her husband, she lived with the castle of Coutancière close to Saumur, like with the castle of Montsoreau.

In 1579, Bussy d' Amboise, which knew it, came to visit him and had imprudence to give a report on its successes near the lady in a letter which the king gave to the husband. Returned in Saumur, the count de Monsoreau forced his wife under the threat of a gun to give appointment to his lover. August 19th, 1579, Charles de Chambes assassinated Bussy d' Amboise with Brain-on-Allonnes, episode which inspired with Alexandre Dumas certain adventures of her novel: the Lady of Montsoreau .

In 1585, it was named to advise of State and obtained the abbey of Saint-Georges close to Angers. In 1587 it was wounded with Coutras and was made captive. June 5th 1589 it obtained 4200 ecus and followed the Duc of Montpensier as brigadier in Brittany to reduce an insurrection. In 1592, it took part in the defeat of Craon in front of the troops of the duke of Mercoeur. In 1596 it was used with the seat as Tigné. In 1619, at 70 years, it accepted in Angers the queen Marie de Médicis with the head of the representatives of the nobility angevine.

Charles de Chambes and Francoise de Maridor had two wire and four girls. Francoise died on September 29th 1620 and the count died the following year, on June 16th 1621.
