Charles W. Misner
Charles W. Misner is a American Physicien specialist in the General relativity. He is especially known to have been joint author of the first modern reference book on general relativity, Gravitation , usually named MTW of the name of his three authors (Misner, Kip Thorne and John Archibald Wheeler).
Biography
Charles Misner obtains his thesis with the Université of Princeton, under the direction of John Archibald Wheeler. He framed several students in thesis, in particular Richard Matzner. He worked thereafter on many aspects in relation to general relativity. With Richard Arnowitt and Stanley Deser, he in particular proposed a definition of the energy associated with the gravitational Champ in some space times in general relativity (see energy WMD), as well as a formulation Hamiltonien of this one (see Formalisme WMD). He took part in the study of the properties of several exact solutions of general relativity, like the Espace of Taub-NUT. He also studied a cosmological Modèle atypical, the Univers mixmaster, which was a time considered as a possible candidate with the resolution of the Problème of the horizon in Cosmologie.
Charles Misner is currently Professor emeritus with the Université of Maryland.
