Charles V Léopold of Lorraine , known as the duke without duchy , born with Vienna the April 3rd 1643, died with Wels the April 18th 1690, was a titular duke of Lorraine of 1675 with 1690. It was wire of Nicolas François, duke of Lorraine, and Claude of Lorraine.

It should have been numbered Charles IV of Lorraine , but the Lorraine historiographers, wanting to establish the legitimacy of the dukes of Lorrraine and of Own way and to attach them directly to the Carolingians, incluèrent in the list of the dukes the Carolingian Charles († 991), duke of Low-Lotharingie.

Biography

He was intended for an ecclesiastical life and was named large provost of the chapter of Saint-Dié as of 1648 and abbot of Gorze in 1649, but the death of his/her older brother in 1659 returned it heir to the Maison to Lorraine and he renonça to his religious career for a military career to the service to the emperor.

The 1664, it is illustrated with the Bataille of Saint-Gothard against the Turks. In September 1675, it is named généralissime imperial armies and takes the title of duke of Lorraine and Bar , its uncle having died the same month. All the European States recognized it like such, except for the France, which occupied the duchies. Its marriage in 1678 did it brother-in-law of the emperor Léopold Ier.

In September 1683, with the assistance of the king de Pologne Jean III Sobieski, it attacked and overcame the Turks who had besieged Vienna for two months. It carried out then several forwardings in the part of the Hungary occupied by the Othoman , took the town of Buda in 1686, reconquered Hungary, then the Slavonie and the Transylvania in 1687.

Falls ill, it gives up its command in May 1688 with Maximilien Emmanuel, voter of Bavaria. Restored, it accepted a command at the time of the Guerre of the league of Augsburg, but it fell sick and died the April 18th 1690.

If one believes Voltaire of it, Louis XIV, by learning its death, declared: I lost largest, wisest and most generous of my enemies .

Marriage and children
