Charles de Habsbourg ( Karl von Habsburg ), (born on October 1st 1685 with Vienna - died the October 20th 1740 with Vienna) is Germanic Roman Emperor or " emperor of Allemagne" under the name of Charles VI and king de Hongrie under the name of Charles III (1711 - 1740).
Second wire of the emperor Léopold I {{er}} and of Eleonora Magdalena von Pfalz-Neuburg, it tries to succeed as king of Espagnes Charles II in 1700, which starts a conflict with Louis XIV and its grandson Philippe, duke of Anjou, conflict known as the War of succession of Spain.
It was initially made crown king d' Espagne with Vienna in 1703, to died of Charles, and went in this kingdom in 1704; it found a frightening competitor in Philippe V of Spain, grandson of Louis XIV, and could not succeed in putting itself in possession of this crown. However the peninsular kingdoms of the Crown of Aragon recognized it as king, under the name of Charles III.
He was however recognized king de Naples (1707). August 1st 1708 it marries Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1691 - 1750).
They had 4 children:
- Marie-Therese (1717 - 1780), married in 1736 with François III duke of Lorraine and Bar, elected Emperor in 1745,
- Marie-Anne (1718 - 1744), controlling of the Netherlands, married in 1744 with Charles of Lorraine (1712 - 1780);
- Marie-Amélie (1724 - 1730).
In 1711, after the death of his/her older brother Joseph I {{er}}, it becomes itself Empereur. Not having sons living, it enacts in 1713 the Pragmatic Sanction authorizing his daughter Marie-Therese to be succeeded to him in its patrimonial fields, which started the War of succession of Austria
It must give up its claims with the throne of Spain in 1714 by the Traité of Rastatt but is able to adapt the Royaume of Naples (1714), the Royaume of Sicily (1720), (two kingdoms that it exchanges in 1738 against the Duché of Parma) and the Spanish Netherlands.
Under its reign, the imperial troops, led by the Prince Eugene, gained over the Turkish S the victories of Peterwaradin (1716) and of Belgrade (1717), and forced them to sign the Paix of Passarowitz (1718). Charles VI undertook at once after a new war against the king of Spain Philippe V, and entered the quadruple alliance formed against this prince by the Great Britain, the France and the States of Holland (1718); but these disagreements were arranged by the Traité of Vienna in 1725. The war was re-ignited in 1733 more at the time of the election of the King de Pologne, Frederic-Auguste, that the emperor Charles VI had supported, while the France supported Stanislas Leszczyński: this war was finished in 1735 by the treated of Vienna of 1738 which gave the Lorraine and the Barrois with Stanislas of compensation for his crown. Attacked by the Turks a little later Charles VI gave up to them in 1739 the Yafachie, the Serbia and Belgrade. He died in 1740.
He had as a Marie-Therese oldest daughter: he wanted to ensure his States of Austria this princess and to this end published as of 1713 a Pragmatic-Sanction; nevertheless its succession was highly disputed This prince left Commentaires on its own life , which were published in Brussels in 1862.
