Charles Thomas

Charles Thomas (born on May 1st, 1913 with Valley-and-Châtillon - deceased October 14th 1944 with Cirey-on-Vezouze) married to Estelle Ginéfri in the commune of Sant' Andréa-di-Bozio (High Corsica), was one of the famous members of resistance FFI under the name of code of " César" in the East of France. It was before the war sergeant with the 9th Zouaves with Extremely-National (Algérie) and then secretary of chancellery with Marseilles.

As of the dissolution of the French Army, he contacts the services of the general De Gaulle in London which charge it with the sector of the place of its childhood, namely Blamont - Cirey in Meurthe-et-Moselle, directed by the chief of the time, the colonel Gilbert Grandval.

Following a denunciation of a Frenchwoman of Valley and Chatillon. He is stopped by the French Milice the Sunday the 1st er October 1944 in his residence of Valley and Chatillon and is delivered to the Gestapo in the Komandantur located at the castle of Cirey-on-Vezouze to be tortured there with three compatriots FFI. Charles Thomas will never speak and will never denounce.

October 14th, 1944, it is carried out by the Nazis in the wood of Cirey-on-Vezouze.

A stele was set up in this wood at the exact place of its execution in company of three resistant comrades. A marble plate was affixed on the war memorial of Valley-and-Châtillon with this engraved text:
" With our comrade and chief in Resistance - Charles Thomas - Tortured and shot by Gestapo on October 14th, 1944 - men of his About thirty FFI Valley-and-Châtillon, saved by its heroic silence - Its chiefs and brothers in arms FFI of the sector of Blamont-Cirey - In testimony of faithful reconnaissance" .
On the frontage of his native house, his/her son-in-law, the general Joseph Plantevin revealed a plate carrying this inscription: Ici was born on May 1st, 1913 Charles Thomas Héros from Resistance. Shot by the enemy on October 14th, 1944 .
