Charles Spurgeon

Charles-Haddon Spurgeon (Kelevedon, Essex, June 19th 1834 - Chin, January 31st 1892) is a preacher British Baptist of second half of the 19th century.

His/her father, James Spurgeon, and his grandfather, John Spurgeon, being Pasteur S, it was high in the knowledge of the Évangile. However, it is in way towards an appointment that a snowstorm forced it to return in a church methodist of Colchester and that it decided to convert with the Christianisme, thing made in May 1850, a few days before its sixteen years. In October 1851, he became Pasteur with the Church Baptist of Waterbeach, in the Cambridgeshire and pointed out itself for a style and an ease well above the average. 3 years later, in 1854, at only twenty years, it was called to preach with the church of New Park Street Chapel, with London, directed before by the theologist Baptist John Gill.

Its preachings attract crowd, and the church quickly became too narrow for the congregation. At twenty-two years, Spurgeon was the preacher more run of the moment, and preached regularly in front of crowd going up to 10.000 faithful. In 1861, it settled definitively with the Metropolitan Tabernacle, built to sit 5.000 people (with 1.000 other places upright).

Baptist and calvinist, Spurgeon was called " the Prince of the prêcheurs" in the tradition Puritan E, and was also appreciated Presbytérien S and Congrégationalistes, with which he was however opposed savagely on the question of the Baptême of the children (that he rejected, in spite of its own Calvinism).

Its sermons, published each week, were popular works. At the time of its death, more than 3.600 of them were in circulation, in addition to 49 volumes of comments, proverbs, anecdotes and sermons various. It also wrote a monthly magazine, and founded a college for the pastors (founded in 1857, initially Pastors' College it was famous Spurgeon' S College in 1923), two orphanages, a hearth for elderly, a biblical company of hawking and several stations missionaries. The legend claims that with dead of Doctor David Livingstone one found among his personal effects a out-of-date and damaged version of one of the sermons of Spurgeon, with an handwritten note on the first page: " Very good, D.L. ".

Spurgeon Maria in 1856 and have two wire (Charles and Thomas) of its Susannah wife. Of fragile health, afflicted with rheumatisms, drop and Nephritis, it made frequent stays with Menton in the south of France to recover. It is there that it died out in 1892.
