Charles Malfray

Charles Malfray is a French sculptor born the July 19th 1887 with Orleans and died the May 28th 1940 with Dijon.

Biography

Born in a family from stone masons and architects, his father himself stone mason, Charles Malfray makes his training in the Master orléanais Lanson. Raise School of the Art schools d' Orlans, it leaves first there. At seventeen years it follows the courses of the School of decorative Arts of Paris and the École of the Art schools, attending the artistic mileiux Montmartre.

Attracted by the art of Rodin and Bourdelle Charles Alexandre Malfray in 1916 survives the hell of the Bataille of Verdun where it is gauze. It creates in 1920 the War memorials of Pithiviers and Orleans, from which the modernism is extremely discussed. Ruined by this work, patient of the continuations of the war, it gives up almost the sculpture. But in 1931 his/her friend Maillol designates it as its successor with the Académie Ranson. While Bissière teaches painting and the fresco there, Malfray has during the following years for pupils in his workshop Etienne Martin, François Stahly, and Jean Moal comes to work there.

Charles Malfray finds the way of creation then. Supported by the Minister for Education Jean Zay, it receives several great orders, in particular Spring for the Palais of Chaillot. There come to look after an old aunt, he dies suddenly in 1940 at the time of a passage to Dijon, in the shop of a pharmacist.

The name of Charles Malfray was given to a street of Orleans.

“The figures of Malfray form a unit with the mass of the stone. It does not make a charm: its sculptire is firmly built, it is land, as the Beauce from which Malfray is resulting. His wives have heavy members, figures in width, an opulent hair with decorative research evoking those of the Greek statuary. ”
