Biography
He studies and plays initially the Hautbois with Sydney before being interested in the direction of orchestra. He remains then with Prague to follow courses near Václav Talich. This formation marks it durably. From 1948, Mackerras is in London, where it directs to the Sadler' S Wells Theater (of which it will deal with the musical and artistic direction until 1977) then, in parallel, with Covent Garden. Between 1961 and 1970, it is very present in Germany, where he is successively permanent invited chief of the opera of State of Berlin (1961-1963) then of Hamburg (1965-1970). In 1972, it makes its beginnings with the Metropolitan Opera, in 1973 with the Opéra of Paris. He is citizen of honor of the town of Prague, from which he regularly directs the philharmonic orchestra since the middle of the years 1980.
Repertory
Charles Mackerras is one of the most estimated alive leaders. He is regarded as the agent of the great tradition of Czechoslovakian orchestral direction such as it was incarnated by Rafael Kubelik and Karel Ančerl and he is, for a long time, considered as the expert par excellence of the operas of Leoš Janáček, that he contributed more than very other to impose on the Western scenes. But if he is also a specialist in the Opérette S of Gilbert and Sullivan, its international repute comes above all from its long story from love with the repertory baroque and traditional: it is indeed as a specialist in Henry Purcell, Georg Friedrich Haendel, Christoph Willibald Gluck and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that Mackerras forged its celebrity at one time when the operas of Janáček were yet only semi-curiosities. Its recording on instruments of time of the Messie of Haendel (1969) made thus date and remains of a great quality thanks to its bright pallet soloists (Janet Baker, Elizabeth Harwood, Robert Tear inter alia) and in spite of choruses considered to be a little yelling.
