Charles Louis of Couëdic , Naval officer French, born with Quimperlé in Brittany in 1739.
Biography
It was Lieutenant and ordered the frigate Supervising it , when, the October 6th 1779, it met with the height of Ushant the Quebec , British frigate, ordered by the captain Farmer. Supervising was armed with 32 guns and Quebec was of the same force. The combat was extraordinarily sharp and bloody between these two sailors, also jealous to defend the honor of their house. Both deployed an untameable courage. The combat lasted three hours and half. Agathon Marie Rene of Bintinaye, his lieutenant, tried the boarding vainly. Quebec jumped with its captain, who wanted to never leave the building that its sovereign had entrusted to him. Forty-three combatants of Quebec were saved by the French. Supervising It , completely disabled and shaven like a pontoon, returned to Brest, bringing back its seriously wounded captain. The building, entirely démâté, was towed by " Expédition" who had also taken share with the combat and who was ordered by the sign of vessel of Roquefeuil. Louis XVI, in consideration of the wounds that from Couëdic had received, and of control full with value and intrepidity which it had held in this business, raised it the October 20th with the rank of captain; but this sailor does not enjoy a long time his glory and of the rewards of its sovereign, he died of his wounds few days afterwards. The king granted to his widow a pension of 2.000 books, reversible by equal portions to his three children, and each one of those a pension of 500 pounds to enjoy it as of the moment. In 1784, the intendant of Brittany was authorized to make carry out and pose an escutcheon with the weapons of of Couëdic on the monument raised in Brest on its tomb, with the expenses of the king. A tomb was high for him in Brest; its name was given to a building and streets as with Rennes the Passage of Couëdic .Its name was given by Nicolas Baudin to a course of the island Kangourou: the Cape de Couedic.
A table of five feet of length and three and half height, pertaining to the king and belonging to the collection of the eighteen combat of sea, was painted by Mister de Rossel, former captain, Chevalier of Saint-Louis.
