Charles Lalemant

Charles Lalemant (1587-1674) is a Jesuit known to have been a pioneer of the instruction in Canada

It was one of the three fathers who arrived at Quebec on June 19th, 1625. The weather crossed four times the sea in the interest of the missions of Canada, and was twice sad shipwrecks. After the rendering of Canada in France, it returned to Quebec, and took care, in 1635, of the church of Notre-Dame de Recouvrance.

It was this father who began in Quebec the first schools for the French children, and who witnessed Mr. of Champlain his last moments. It turned over to Paris in the autumn 1651, and died there on November 18th, 1674, 87 years old.
