Charles Jonnart
Charles Célestin Auguste Jonnart (December 27th 1857 with Fléchin - September 30th 1927) is a French politician.
Biography
Resulting from a middle-class family of the Northern , Charles Jonnart made his studies with Saint-Omer, then with Paris, the Faculty of Law. Allured by the Algeria which he had visited young man, he was named in 1881, by Gambetta, with the cabinet of the general governor of Algeria. In 1884, it is named director of the service of the Algérie to the ministry for the Interior.Starting a political career at the sides of the liberals, he was elected in 1886 general adviser of Saint-Omer, then in 1889, Député of the Pas-de-Calais. He was distinguished with the Chambre by his frequent interventions on the colonial questions concerning in particular with the organization from the Algérie.
Chosen in 1893 by Casimir Périer to occupy the post of minister of the Public works, it was elected in 1894 Senator of the Pas-de-Calais. The same year, an car accident obliges it to cease its ministry.
In 1900, it was going to find the Algérie, where it was named general governor by Waldeck-Rousseau. He resigns as of 1901 for health reasons.
In 1903, it returned to its station to Algiers. It contributed to accelerate the career of the future marshal Lyautey. This one, which was yet only Colonel, was promoted Général and was seen entrusting by Jonnart the execution of the policy algéro- Morocco groin.
In 1911, having returned in metropolis to sit again at the Parliament, Charles Jonnart was named, the day before the war, Foreign Minister in the cabinet Briand. During the First World War, it was with the Sénat rapporteur of the commission of the Foreign affairs. He was briefly Minister for the Blockade within the government Clemenceau. Then the allied powers chose it like agent near the king Constantin of Greece, to force this last to abdicate.
After the war, he became president of the democratic Republican party in 1920 then was named Ambassadeur France close the the Holy See, with the delicate mission to join again the diplomatic relations with the the Vatican. He was elected with the French Academy the April 19th 1923.
