Charles Ier de Mecklembourg-Strelitz

Charles 1st of Mecklembourg-Strelitz (in German Karl von Mecklenburg-Strelitz), born on February 23rd, 1708 with Strelitz, deceased on June 5th, 1752 with Mirow.

Family

He is the son of Adolphe-Frederic {{II}} and of Marie de Mecklembourg-Güstrow.

Marriage and descent

In 1735, Charles 1st of Mecklembourg-Strelitz married Elisabeth of Saxony-Hildbourghausen (deceased in 1761), girl of the duke Ernest-Frederic 1st of Saxony-Hildbourghausen.

Ten children were born from this union:

  • Adolphe-Frederic {{IV}}, duke of Mecklembourg-Strelitz

  • Charles {{II}}, duke then large-duke of Mecklembourg-Strelitz

  • Christine de Mecklembourg-Strelitz (1735 - 1794)

  • Caroline de Mecklembourg-Strelitz (1736 - 1736)

  • Elisabeth de Mecklembourg-Strelitz (1739 - 1741)

  • Gotthelf de Mecklembourg-Strelitz (1745 - 1745)

  • Georges de Mecklembourg-Strelitz (1748 - 1785).

Biography

Second wire of the duke Adolphe-Frederic de Mecklembourg-Strelitz, Charles 1st lived with his family with the castle of Mirow where he died at forty-four years. His/her older brother, Adolphe-Frederic {{III}} died a few months after (December 11th, 1752) without male heir. Adolphe-Frederic V, wire of Charles 1st succeeded his uncle in 1752.

Genealogy

Charles 1st of Mecklembourg-Strelitz belongs to the third branch (Mecklembourg-Strelitz), resulting from the first branch of the Maison of Mecklembourg. This third line died out with dead of the large-duke Georges-Alexandre de Mecklembourg (1996). Georges Borwin is the current one claiming with the succession.
