Charles III of Monaco

Charles III Grimaldi (December 8th 1818 - September 10th 1889) was reigning prince of Monaco of the June 20th 1856 until its death. He is the son of Prince Florestan of Monaco and Caroline Gibert de Lametz.

Its Sérénissime Highness the prince of Monaco, duke of Valentinois, marquis of the Beams and other titles.
Marriage and children
Charles Marie with the countess Antoinette de Mérode-Westerloo the September 28th 1846. His/her son Albert Ier succeeds to him.
Work of the prince
During its reign the towns of Chin and Roquebrune, constituting more than 80 pourcent territory Monegasque are officially yielded to the France, preparing the official recognition of the independence of Monaco by France.
Advised by his mother, and thanks to the dowry of his wife, it founds the casino Monte Carlo. In 1885, its effigy is reproduced on the first emission of postage stamps of Monaco, replacing the stamps of France.
