Charles Hugo is the second wire of the four children of Victor Hugo, born on November 3rd 1826 with Paris and deceased on March 13rd 1871 with Bordeaux.
Biography
Good pupil, Charles obtains the first price of the open Competition in Latin topic on July 31st 1840.In February 1848, it is some time secretary of Alphonse of Lamartine. October 1st, it founds with his father, his brother François-Victor Hugo, Paul Meurice and Auguste Vacquerie, the political newspaper the Event . It supports initially Lamartine, then the back for finally approving turns to him the candidature of the prince Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte against Louis Eugene Cavaignac. He will regret finally its decision in 1849, as of the come to power of that which will be called “Small Napoleon” by his own father.
The 16 May 1851, it publishes an article against the Capital punishment: it then is prosecuted and is defended by Victor Hugo. Condemned on July 30th to 6 months of prison, he is imprisoned with the Conciergerie. Left prison the 28 January 1852, it joined his father in exile with Brussels since December 14th previous.
It will still undergo judgments for the expression of its ideas until 1870.
He was the grandfather of the painter Jean Hugo.
In 1871, Charles dies of a Apoplexie striking down in Bordeaux, owe the coffee Lanta (today the Regent) Gambetta place. A friend will note on his newspaper:
To six hours and half, I went to the Lanta restaurant. Misters Bouvier, Mourot and Casse arrive. Then Alice, Charles is made attendre.
