Charles Grimaldi

Charles Grimaldi , in Italian Carlo Grimaldi , lord of Monaco (starting from 1342), of Chin and Vintimille. In 1346, it acquires of the seigniory of Menton. Died in 1357 after having fought the doge of Genoa, Simon Boccanegra.

Short history

Following civil wars with Genoa, many families Guelfes are exiled among whom that of Grimaldi. This powerful family of patricians génois is established on Riviera Western and in the area of Nice, besieging and occasionally occupying Monaco, a fortress génoise at the time (See François Grimaldi says “Malizia”). Charles Grimaldi, an influencing guelfe chief, occupies the Rock on September 12th 1331 and sees himself recognizing “Lord of Monaco” in 1342. Charles and his cousin Antoine Grimaldi launch out in the acquisition of grounds and fields in the area. In 1346 and 1355, Grimaldi acquire of the seigniories and strongholds of Chin and Roquebrune. These are the seigniories, with that of Monaco, which will constitute the territory of the Principality of 1633 with 1861.
