Charles Gleyre

Charles Gleyre or Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre , born the May 2nd 1806 with Chevilly in the Canton of Vaud and dead the May 5th 1874, is a painter Suisse.

Biography

After having studied in Paris at Louis Harrow, then to Rome, it leaves in Egypt in 1834 and remains there during four years. Of return to Paris, he works some time with Ingres on a project for the Château of Dampierre and exposes to the Living room the work which will make it pass to the posterity, the Evening , called later the lost Illusions . This table is oldest of the Musée of Orsay. Academic painter with the irreproachable drawing, Charles Gleyre approaches to romantic and the Symbolists, by the poetry of this work to the mysterious and unreal colors.

Its art preaches the return to the antique.

It takes again the workshop of Paul Delaroche in 1843.

Its workshop was attended in particular by Jean-Leon Gérôme, Jean-Louis Hamon, Alfred Sisley, Jean-Jules-Antoine Lecomte of Nouy, Auguste Toulmouche, Edward Poynter, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Frederic Bazille, Gaston Save, Daniel Ridgway Knight and James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
