Charles Gildon

Charles Gildon (born towards 1665 - died in 1724) is a writer English of the beginning of the 18th century, in turn translator, biographer, essay writer, Dramaturge, Poète, author of fictitious letters, fabulist and Critique.

One owes him of much information on the life of the majority of the authors of the English Restauration, although it seems to have invented and have propagated many inaccurate facts in what relates to them. This discussed writer was the target of Alexander Pope, at the same time in Dunciade and in the Épître with Dr. Arbuthnot . Gildon was also the enemy of Jonathan Swift.

The biographies of Gildon are, in many cases, the only available ones. Nevertheless, it was proven that almost all contained invented facts of all parts. Because of the caricature of Gildon made by Pope, but also because of the important volume of its writings, Gildon passes for the prototype of the writer opportunist and resorting readily to negros.
