Charles Fuller Baker is a entomologist, a Botaniste, a agronomist and a Collection American nor , born the March 22nd 1872 in Lansing in the Michigan and dead the July 22nd 1927 with Manila.
After studies at the school of agriculture of Michigan, he becomes assistant of Clarence Preston Gillette (1859-1941) at the school of agriculture of the Colorado. Baker begins its research and its collections in Botanique and Entomologie, it also makes appear its first publications.
Among them, it is necessary to quote a study of the Hémiptère S of the Colorado ( has Preliminary List off the Hemiptera off Colorado ) which it signs with C.P. Gillette.
In 1893, it is charged to present the Foresterie and the Zoologie of Colorado to Columbian Exposition of Chicago. Between 1897 and 1899, it works for the polytechnic Institute of the Alabama.
It takes part in 1898 - 1899 in the forwarding of Herbert Huntington Smith (1851-1919) in the mountains of Santa Marta of Colombia.
Of 1899 with 1901, it teaches the Biologie with the Exchange High School of Saint Louis. He studies at the Stanford university of California with Vernon Lyman Kellogg (1867-1937). He obtains there in 1903 his Master off Sciences.
Always in 1903 and thanks to the intervention of Albert John Cook (1842-1916), it obtains a station of professor-assistant in Pomona College but remains only one year there. It is at that time that it starts to publish on the Invertébré S of the Pacifique.
It settles then with Cuba where he becomes director of the department of botany of the agricultural research station of Santiago of Las Vegas. Post that it preserves until in 1907. It goes then to the Brésil where it becomes preserving Herbier and Botanical garden of the Museu Goeldi of Para. During the year that it passes in this country, it piles up a large collection of plants and insects. It turns over to Pomona College in 1908.
He convinces Cook to finance scientific periodicals. Thus starts the publication, in March 1909, of the Journal off Entomology and in February 1911 of the Journal off Economic Botany . Later, work of the station of marine biology of Pomona College will off appear under the title of Annual Report the Laguna Marine Laboratory (1912).
In October 1911, the nomination of A.J. Cook at the Commission of horticulture of California upsets so much the activities of the department of zoology, which it accepts the post of professor of Agronomie at the university of Manila that his/her friend offers to him, the senior Edwin Bingham Copeland (1873-1964). It preserves this station of many years safe in 1917 - 1918, where he is director-assistant of the botanical garden of Singapore.
Baker devotes its spare time to its collection of Insecte S and to its breedings. After its departure of Cuba, it finances a collector, Julian Hernandez, which it had formed itself. It is also interested in botany and mycology of the Filipino archipelago.
Its health becoming failing, it wishes to return to the the United States and to be devoted to its research. Unfortunately, the negotiations for obtaining a post office to the California Academy off Sciences fail. David L. Crawford (1889-1941?), one of its former students and chair university of Hawaii, offers a station then to him. But he dies a few days only after the office of the university of Philippines appointed it professor of tropical agriculture and highly skilled senior of the experimental station.
Baker leaves an immense collection of 400.000 spread out specimens, arranged in 1.500 boxes, all full, and 200.000 not spread out. It is about the largest collection deprived on the Pacifique area. The majority of its insects are currently preserved by the National Museum off Natural History and its Herbier by the university of Philippines.
