Charles Francis Richter is an American seismologist born in Butler County close to Hamilton (Ohio) the April 26th 1900 and died the September 30th 1985 with Altadena (California).
Biography
Charles Richter was born in a family from farmers from Ohio. He passes his adolescence to Los Angeles to California.
He attends the laboratory of Sismologie of Pasadena in 1927 and studies with the Université of Stanford, and with the " California Institute off Technology " (Caltech), where it obtained its PhD de Physique in 1928. The same year, he marries Lillian Brand.
In 1935, not satisfied with the scales of Rossi (years 1880) or of Mercalli (1902) describing the Seism S in terms of destruction or feeling, it presents a scale making it possible to describe the intensity of a Earthquake with its epicentre by concerned energy.
He works with the " Carnegie Institute " of 1927 with 1936 then with the " California Institute off Technology" like technical personnel. He becomes professor of seismology in 1952 there.
In 1956, with Beno Gutenberg (1889 - 1960), it shows that the magnitude 0 corresponds to approximately 104 Joules, whereas magnitude 9 equalizes 1017 Joules.
He dies on September 30th, 1985 with Altadena close to Pasadena in California.
