Charles Etienne Gudin of the Sand pit

César Charles Etienne Gudin of the Sand pit is one, born the February 13rd 1768 with Saint-Maurice-on-Aveyron (Loiret) and died the August 22nd 1812 with Smolensk.

Old Mode

It makes its studies with the school of Brienne, then is second lieutenant in the Régiment of Artois-Infantry in 1784. It is used with the Expédition as Santo Domingo in 1791.

Consulate and Empire

It passes with its division under the orders of Lannes, and develops great military talents with the battles of Eckmühl and Bataille of Regensberg. The Gudin general is distinguished particularly at the beginning from the Campagne from Russia. With the Battle of Valutino (August 19th), at the time when its division, which had just collapsed the center of the Russian column, was going to seize the enemy position, it is struck of a ball of gun which carries the two legs to him.

He dies in Smolensk, on August 22nd, 1812, of the continuations of the wounds received with the combat of Valutino. He was the friend of the marshal of Empire Davout.

Posterity

He is buried in the cemetery of Saint-Maurice-on-Aveyron, in Loiret. Its tomb (gathering many members of its family) exists always, leant with the wall on the high part of the cemetery. Its name is registered on the Triumphal arch of the Star, east coast.

In Montargis, the barracks of the school of the assistant gendarmes names " Barracks Gudin ". This barracks being in the past the School of application of the transmissions, before the law " Army 2000 ".
