Charles Duquette

Charles Duquette (July 25th, 1869 - December 30th, 1937) was a Business man and a politician Québécois. He was the thirty-third mayor of Montreal.

Born in the city, he studied at the Frères of the Christian schools and with the Saint-Henri College. He married in Dorothée Maheux the October 18th 1919. He has a training of administrator. Before its entry in policy, he is the president director-general of the National alliance and chair it Canadian fraternal association, acting as treasurer. Member of the Chamber of commerce of Montreal and the commission of the agricultural loans, he becomes governor of the Hôpital Notre-Dame.

Duquette became the president of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptist of Montreal in 1912. The Duquette avenue with Our-Lady-of-Grace is baptized in its honor on February 17th, 1917. It remarie with Albina Beaudoin on October 18th, 1919.

Because of his great popularity, the conservative Esioff Patenaude suggests to him representing himself with the town hall. He beats Médéric Martin on April 7th, 1924 with: 43221 votes against: 40125. Martin had remained with the capacity long enough to be itself mingled with controversies.

September 7th, 1924, Duquette inaugurates the Hôpital of the Sacred Heart with Messeigneurs Georges Gauthier and Pietro Di Maria. The October 19th of the same year, it accommodates Georges V from the United Kingdom in Montreal with many personalities.

In 1926, it inaugurates the new building of the town hall of Montreal, which had been devastated by a fire in 1922. Duquette east demolishes in its turn by Médéric Martin the same year.

He is elected president of the chamber of commerce in 1930 - 1931. At the time of the Great depression, he is member of the committee of the unemployment of the National Assembly of Quebec. He dies in 1937. He was catholic and he did not have any child.
