Charles Cros

Charles Cros (Fabrezan, Aude, October 1st 1842 - Paris, August 9th 1888) was a Poète and inventor French.

Impassioned literature and sciences, it was a time, of 1860 with 1863, chemistry teacher at the Parisian Institute of Deaf-mute, before being devoted to the scientific research. In 1869, it presented to the French company of photography a process of Photographie colors which is at the origin of the current process of Trichromie. He also studied improvements with the technology of the Télégraphe: he had presented to the Exposure 1867 an automatic prototype of telegraph.

The paléophone

In April 1877 especially, it formulated the principle of an apparatus of reproduction of the sounds which it named paléophone . Its document, presented to the Academy of Science, suggested that the sound vibrations could beings engraved in metal using a pencil attached to a vibrating membrane, and that, thereafter, while making slip a stylet attached to a membrane on this engraving one would manage to reproduce the initial sound. Before Charles Cros did not have the possibility of following his idea to even build a prototype, Thomas Edison, at the the United States, developed the first Phonographe. The two men did not know their reciprocal work.

Poetries

Its work of poet, also brilliant (one of the sources of inspiration of the Surrealism, and since republished in Pleiad ) was ignored by its time as much. It bitterly summarizes it in this characteristic poem:

I can make perpetual worms. The men is charmed with my voice which says the truth. the supreme reason of which I have proud, inherited would not be paid with all the sums. I very touched: fire, women and apples; I very felt: the winter, spring and the summer; I very found, no wall having stopped me. But Chance, thus tell me which name you do name itself? I distract myself to see through the squares Of the shops, gloves, truffles and accounts - checks Where happiness is a follow-up of six zeros. I am astonished, being worth well the kings, the bishops, general colonels and receivers not to have not water, sun, water melons.

It published its first poems in the contemporary Parnassus and attended the literary circles and coffees of Bohemian of the time (Cercle of the poets Zutistes - that it had created -, Vilains Fellows, Hydropathes), as well as the living room of Nina de Villard which was its mistress until in 1877. But if he were known, in truth, it was for its monologs, whose most known the Smoked herring is , that he recited itself in Parisian cabarets like the black Cat.

In its honor the Académie Charles-Cross-country race was created which rewards each year best the discs.
