Charles Cornwallis

Charles Cornwallis (December 31st 1738 - October 5th 1805 with Calcutta), 1st marquis Cornwallis, was a British general which is known as commander of the British troops at the time of the Siège of Yorktown. Its most important work was as general governor of India (1786-1793) and viceroy of Ireland.

He played an important role at the time of the war of American Independence as a combatant the insurrectionists. He gained the Bataille of Camden the August 16th 1780 over the troops of the general Horatio Gates but was overcome by the troops of Rochambeau and the fleet of Grasse to Yorktown. In spite of its defeat it is named general governor of India and published a series of regulation known under the name of Code Cornwallis. It demolished the troops of the Sultan Tippu at the time of the third of the four Guerres of Mysore.

Like Lord lieutenant d' Irlande, it attacked corruption and was committed punishing only the chiefs for the independence of Ireland and prevented an invasion of the French troops on September 9th, 1798; he resigned to protest against the refusal of the king George III to grant political rights to the Irish catholics.

He turned over to India or he died shortly after his arrival with Calcutta in 1805.
