Charles Clerke
Charles Clerke , born in 1741, died in 1779, was a British navigator , which took part in the the third forwarding in the Pacific (1776 - 1779) of James Cook.
Until 1779, he was captain of the Discovery , making in particular stopover with the islands Kerguelen, in New Zealand, in the islands of the Company, in the Vancouver Island, in Alaska, with the Aleutian Islands and on the two sides of the Bering Strait.
Returned in the “center” of the Pacific Ocean at the sides of the Resolution ordered by Cook, it took the command of the “flagship”, the February 14th 1779, when Cook made the imprudence of an incursion with ground, in the large island of Hawaii, and was partially devoured there by the autochtones.
Reached phthisis, Charles Clerke died the August 3rd 1779, the changing of the command of forwarding being then taken by his lieutenant Gore, until the unloading of return of forwarding, the October 4th 1780 in Great Britain.
