Charles César de Fay of the Turn-Maubourg
Marie-Charles-César-Florimond de Fay, count of the Turn-Maubourg (born the February 11th 1756 with Grenoble, - died the May 28th 1831 with Paris) was a French soldier and politician who carried on his activity for the periods of the Révolution and of the Empire.
During Monarchy
It was in 1782 second lieutenant in the Régiment of Beaujolais wine-Infantry, in 1786 captain in the Régiment of Orleans-Cavalry, and in 1789, second lieutenant of the bodyguards.
Under the French revolution
Colonel of the Regiment of Soissonnais in 1789, appointed of the nobility of the Puy-en-Velay to the General states, friend of Joseph-Gilbert Motier, marquis of Fayette.It is one of the first to join the Tiers state, it is charged with Antoine Barnave, Jerome Pétion to bring back the royal family to Paris at the time of the attempt at escape to Varennes (June 1791). Its devotion, on this occasion, will remain misunderstood of Marie-Antoinette (cf Memories of Madam de Tourzel). With the separation of the constituent Assembly, like Brigadier, it accompanies the marquis by Fayette with the Armée with the Center in 1792 and emigrates with him after the dismissal of Louis XVI (August 10th 1792. Initially imprisoned by the Austrians, it is released after the Traité of Campo-Formio (October 18th 1797) and lives with Hamburg.
Under the Consulate and the First Empire
Returned to France, it deals with making rebuild the family castle, destroyed under the Revolution by a fire (the private residences built at that time are rare…). But that does not prevent it from reaching various political offices. He is member of the legislative Body then becomes senator in 1804. In 1808, he is military governor of Cherbourg.Concerned of the management of its inheritance, it will take part in the financing of the industrial activities of Pierre Samuel Of the Bridge of Nemours, founder of the famous American dynasty.
Under the Restoration
In 1814, it is named Pair France at the time of the First Restoration and preserves its station during the Hundred Days. He is Government commissioner for certain departments of the West of France. During the fall of Napoleon, it is excluded from the Room of the pars, until 1819. It reinstates this Senate then.Knight about Saint Louis, Napoleon had named it Commandeur of the Légion of honor, It died in 1831 in Paris.
Descent of Charles césar of Fay of the Turn-Maubourg
Father of seven children, one of his sons, born in 1784, will be killed during the countryside of Spain.Elder, Right Florimond (1781 - 1837, Listener with the Council of State under the Empire, will become ambassador from France to Dresden, Constatinople and Rome. He will become even of France in 1830 and large Officer of the Legion of Honor the same year.
The second, Rodolphe (1787 - 1871), officer of the campaigns of the Empire will be major general, large Officer of the Legion of Honor. It will become even of France in 1845
The third, Armand - Septime (1801 - 1845), bachelor of law, will become Master of the requests to the Council of State. Under the Monarchy of July, he will be ambassador in Naples, in Spain then in Rome, where he succeeds his older brother. Par of France, he will be commander of the Legion of honor. A portrait of his wife, painted by Theodore Chassériau was recently acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
For the following generation, we can mention César Florimond of the Tower Maubourg (1820 - 1886) wire of Right Florimond and Caroline of the Perron of Martin Saint. Officer of cavalry, he will become administrator of the Central Large Railroad, appointed Haute-Loire throughout all Second Empire, honorary chamberlain of Napoleon III and captain of Huntings of imperial Hunting.
He will marry in 1849 Anne Mortier of Trévise '1824 - 1900), grand-daughter of the Maréchal Mortar Duc of Trévise, which will be lady of the Palate of the Empress Eugenie and who appears in the extreme right-hand side of the famous table of Franz Xaver Winterhalter. A brilliant life follows then. Part of the notebooks of the marchioness was published by the general of Thimble-Brissac in the Review of the Napoleonean Memory and is available on the site napoléon.org.
Their son will be killed during the Guerre of 1870 at age the 20 years and their daughter will die shortly after her marriage, without descent. After the death of her husband, the marchioness of Maubourg will carry out a life at the same time withdrawn and active in its various residences, Maubourg, Paris, Cannes and Glareins (Ain).
The last descendants of the Fay family of the Turn-Maubourg are buried in a mausoleum in the commune of Saint-Maurice-with-Lignon, mausoleum which would have been built starting from the plans of the Lyons architect Carra (files of Glareins)
