Charles Braibant
Charles Braibant (March 31st 1889 - April 23rd 1976) is a Archiviste paleographer and man of letters.
Chief of the service of the files and libraries of the Navy of 1919 to 1944, it is named director of the Archives of France in 1948. In these functions, which he exerts until 1959, its activity and its initiatives mark in a considerable way the public records in France and abroad. He increases the Public records while making acquire by the State several contiguous buildings with the hotel of Soubise and he makes build new buildings of conservation. He also creates there in 1949 a service of the private archives and economic, of which one of the mainstays is Bertrand Gille. It is with him that one owes the sending in several great ministries of conservatives " in mission" charged helping the central administrations with better managing their intermediate files and with organizing the payment of their final files to the Public records. He plays also a big role as regards co-operation with the archivists of foreign countries: he chairs the International counsel of the files of 1950 to 1954 and he creates in 1951 three months an annual training course open to the French archivists and foreigners who allows those to acquire a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of use in the services of French files.
Member of the Council about the academic Palms and of the Council of the Order of Arts and the Letters, it chairs also various associations of men of letters.
He obtains to the Prix Renaudot in 1933 for the King sleeps .
