Charles Borromée , in Italian Carlo Borromeo , (born in 1538 with Arona, on the edges of the Lake Maggiore - died in 1584 with Milan) was a prelate Italy N of the 16th century, dignitary of the Église, craftsman of the catholic Réforme, which was canonized as of 1610 by the Pape Paul V.

Biography

Charles Borromée was born in an aristocratic family lombarde. His/her mother was a Médicis, sister of Giovanni Angelo de Médicis, which was elected pope under the name of Pie IV. At the 12 years age, it accepted the Tonsure, and the benefit of the abbey Bénédictin E of Arona, left vacant by his uncle. It made its studies in Milan then with Pavia. When his/her father died in 1558, it had to take in hand the businesses of its family. The following year, his/her maternal uncle was elected with died of Paul IV. In 1561, it was promoted Cardinal Secretary of State, cardinal, then apostolic Légat with Bologna, in Romagna and in the Marches. It took part in the Concile of Thirty.

It stuck in this council to reform the abuses which had been introduced into the Church, and made write celebrates it catechism known under the name of Catéchisme of the Council of Thirty (1566). Named Archbishop of Milan in 1564, it was dislocated of all its other loads to go to reside in its diocese; it gave the example of all the virtues and restores the discipline everywhere to it. It got busy to apply to it measurements of the Counter-Reformation taken to the council. First of all, it took its residence in Milan and opened a Séminaire to improve the formation of the clergy. It restored the observance of the rule in the convents and made fix grids at the visiting rooms. Soon, it extended the theater of its action to all Italy, then with the Suisse. One of the orders which he wanted to reform, the Ordre of Humiliated the, tried to make it assassinate, but he escaped the blows from the assassin. At the time of the plague which afflicted Milan in 1576, it ran in this city of the bottom of its diocese, and facing the contagion, carried everywhere helps and consolations. He founded in 1581 a congregation of oblats, secular priests who will be then known under the name of “oblats of Charles saint”. He died in 1584, at 46 years, exhausted by tirednesses and the austerities. He took place miraculous cures on his tomb.

He was canonized on November 1st 1610 by Paul V. He is celebrated the November 4th. A colossal statue was set up to him with Arona. His/her cousin is Frederic Borromée.

Homage

Perndant November, period which is dedicated to him, are exposed in the Dôme of Milan, the fabrics of the monumental cycle known as “ Quadroni di San Carlo ” of the life of the saint and his miracles, painted by a group of artists of the 17th century to which second It Cerano, It Morazzone and Giulio Cesare Procaccini.

November 4th is the day of the Saint Charles Borromeo. In Bastia under the impulse of the Brotherhood San Carlu, a mass is celebrated in the church bearing its name in the district of the right street, near to the street of the mercy. Its statue left in procession around the church accompanied by the clergy, the fellow-members of Saint-Charles of Bastia.
