Charles Bernardy

Charles-Alexandre Bernard , known as Charles Bernardy , is a Danseur, choreographer and Maître to dance born with Antwerp the May 17th 1724 and died with Paris the June 15th 1807.

One crosses it in a ceaseless way during forty years in the Austrian Netherlands, in Holland, in the Principauté of Liege and in France. From October 1752 with the Branches 1753, Bernardy and his wife direct the theater of Ghent, whereas the latter danced there already the former season, in the troop of the prince d' Orange. This same troop is with $the Hague in May 1753, but Charles Bernardy does not seem to have followed there. As of 1755, it is one of the first dancers of to Vienna, under the direction of the choreographer Franz Hilverding. Ribou and Baptiste, actors of Ghent and Brussels, will undoubtedly have praised its merits near the count Durazzo, the intendant of the theaters of Vienna. Bernardy remains several seasons and it there become acquainted there with dancers such as Antoine Pitrot and of the future choreographer Gasparo Angiolini. It creates in 1759 there ballets such as the Turks and the Wig makers .

Called to Brussels as ballet master for the season 1763-1764, Bernardy gives to it Rhœcus or Hamadryades , ballet represented with the Théâtre of the Currency the May 29th 1763. One month later, it composes Circé or the Delivery of the companions of Ulysses .

He then dances with London in 1764 and in 1765, leads a troop to Amiens, Arras and Calais, then returns to Ghent to the autumn 1766. Of 1767 with 1774, it directs in turn the theaters of Liege, Spa and Maastricht.

In 1775, it joins together a troop of children whom it introduces in particular to Antwerp and with Rotterdam under the name of “Brabantsche Kinderen” ( the Children let us brabançons ). Of 1775 with 1780, the troop occurs with Amiens, Cambrai, Strasbourg, Colmar, Paris (with the theater of the “Small Actors of the Bois de Boulogne”), Angers, Mans, Aix-en-Provence, Toulon, Marseilles, Dijon, Passy, Saint-Quentin, Antwerp and Brussels.

Bernardy is fixed then at Liege, from where it directs again the theaters of Spa, Maastricht, Ghent, Bruges and Ostend. It gives up the direction of the theaters after 1793 and settles with Paris near its grand-daughter, Miss Fleury, Actrice of the Comédie-Française. He dies in 1807, Rue of Vaugirard.
