Charles Bacon

Charles Joseph Jr Bacon. , born the January 9th 1885 and deceased the November 15th 1968, was a American Athlète Olympic champion.

With the Olympic Games of summer of 1904 with Saint Louis, Charles Bacon finished ninth on 1.500 m. With the inserted Olympic Games of 1906, it was classified fifth on 400 m and sixth on 800 m.

It attint the top of its sporting career to the Olympic Games of summer of 1908 with London. Little before these plays, Bacon had run one 400 m hedges in 55" 8 (better world but unofficial performance). In London, it gained the final in 55" 0 front its compatriot Harry Hillman in 55" 3. During the race, Bacon briefly changed corridor and jumped the bad hedge. It was however not disqualified, the jury considering that it had not profited from an advantage.

Hillman had been crowned champion four years earlier in 53" 0. Nevertheless, in St-Louis, the hedges measured 76 cm instead of 91 cm. The time of Bacon acted as world records thus. When in 1912, IAAF recognized for the first time of the world records, the time of Bacon in 1908 was recognized. As this race was not run in 1912, its record lasted until 1920.
