Charles Armand de Gontaut-Biron , grandson of Armand de Gontaut-Biron, (1663 - 1756), served with distinction under Louis XIV and Louis XV, and was made marshal by this last.
Ordering the French avant-garde with the Battle of Audenarde (1708), it ventilated the first operation of by-pass Marlborough. However, opposed on its lines to much higher forces of number, it could not change the course of the battle which followed.
