Charles-Joseph Panckoucke , born the November 26th 1736 with Lille and dead the December 19th 1798 with Paris, is a writer and a editor French.
Biography
Wire of Andre Joseph Panckoucke (1700 - 1753), itself writer and editor, Charles-Joseph settles with Paris in 1754. It is him which suggests with Denis Diderot (1713 - 1784) giving one following the Encyclopédie in 1769 but this project falls through. Panckoucke obtains nevertheless a license to make appear a supplement in 1775 which appears in four volumes in 1776 and 1777.Panckoucke also makes appear in two volumes the index of the Encyclopédie , these volumes are prepared by Pierre Mouchon (1733 - 1797) and are published in 1780.
But the philosopher's stone of Panckoucke remains the methodical Encyclopédie , a new encyclopedia organized by subject rather than alphabetically. It receives an authorization of publication in 1780 and makes appear its first advertizing leaflet in 1782. This immense whole of 166 volumes appears until in 1832, the publication after the death of Panckoucke being ensured by his/her daughter widowed Therese-Charlotte Agasse of her associate Henri Agasse (1792 - 1813). The encyclopedic and methodical Table of the three reigns of nature , is a part devoted to the Natural history and which appears also individually.
Panckouke is also the editor of two famous reviews, the Mercure de France and the Universal Monitor which it founds in November 1789.
He played a big role in the diffusion of knowledge at the 18th century. Close friend of large the Philosopher S and intellectuals of his century, he becomes official publisher-bookseller of royal Printing works and the royal Academy of sciences, and an impossible to circumvent figure of the edition, to some extent one of the first press barons.
His/her sister Amélie Panckoucke (1750 - 1830) was a woman of letters and famous salonnière. His/her son Charles-Louis-Fleury Panckoucke (1780 - 1844) was also a writer and a famous editor.
