The Aumônier was formerly the priest which, attached to a person of high ranking, was charged to distribute its alms to the poor and to celebrate the worship in its particular vault.
Currently the chaplains have the role of ensuring a Christian presence:
-
near a laic or denominational institution (school, prison, hospital, military unit…) ;
-
near a human group (students, artists, travelling entertainers, sailors, foreigners,…) ;
-
near religious communities, or of movements catholic (scouting, A.C.E., Catholic aid….) for a role of spiritual council, religious formation, or apostolic animation.
One speaks sometimes about chaplain for the other religions.
