Chapdes-Beaufort is a Commune Frenchwoman in the Département of the Puy-de-Dôme in Auvergne.
Chapdes-Beaufort is located in the area auvergnates Combrailles. The commune is located in the Chaîne of Puys. Two puys dominate the village: the puy of Beaufort (alt. 886 m) and the puy of Montcognol (alt. 921 m).
The site was occupied at the Stone Age (see the article Préhistoire) and the Gallo-Roman time as the vestiges found at the time of archaeological excavations testify some.
In 1219, Guillaume and Raoul of Beaufort, brothers, gave part of their grounds to the order of the Chartreux. On this site on the edge of the Sioule was founded the Chartreuse of the Port-Sainte-Marie. Last work of importance took place at the 17th century. After its sale as Bien national during the French revolution it fell in ruin.
The village knew full sound rise at the time of the exploitation of the Mine of Barbecot where siver-bearing Galène was exploited. The mine was worked starting from 1838 by the Société Alphonese Pallu and Co . The ore was transformed into money at the foundry of Pontgibaud. The totality of the mines (concession of Combres, Barbecot and Roure) of the sector of Pontgibaud ceased their activities in 1898.
Louis Rosier driver racing was born the November 5th 1905 in Chapdes-Beaufort.
The ruins are the subject of restoration. Many elements sold during the revolution are dispersed in the churches of the neighbouring communes (Pontgibaud: Furnace bridge, Manzat: woodworks, piéta, Comps: rule of the founder of the Carthusian monks, Saint Bruno etc)
The sculptor Gilles Perez with installed on a course of approximately 3 km, a score of contemporary sculptures. They consist of elements carved in the local volcanic rock.
