Chaotic fountain

A chaotic fountain is a type of fountain imagined by Edward Lorentz.

Principle

  1. a tilted wheel carries cups.
  2. a tap pours water, filling the cups when they pass under the jet.
  3. the cups are bored and are emptied gently.
  4. the wheel is put moving according to the weight of the cups.

This fountain is particular because its movement is unforeseeable. Negligible variations change its speed and its direction of rotation.

At present, no computer manages to envisage its movement more than two minutes.

A version of this fountain is visible in the city of sciences and industry in the Parc from the Villette in Paris.
