Chaos of Montpellier-the-Old man
Montpellier-the-Old man is a ruiniform rock chaos on the Black Causse, bordered in the south by the Gorges of Dourbie, located at the North-East of Millau, enough close to famous the viaduct, on the commune of the Castling-Holy-Marguerite.
The rock is Dolomite. Chaos covers 120 ha.
The imagination of the visitors sees in the rocks of the similarities with fortifications in ruins and gives them names pointing out mythology. Each one wants to be made photograph under the door of Mycène, large arch of stone. The shepherds called it Lo Clapas Viel (the old stone heap, in Occitan). He became Montpellier-the-Old man when Edouard Martel explored it in 1883-1884 because " Lo Clapas" is the familiar nickname that the montpellierains give to their city by reference to his old calcareous stone center.
