History

CHANONAT, on banks of Auzon, the vestiges of the history, the crosses and the fountains…

In year 52, before J.C, of the small groups of soldiers of the legions of Jules César go up in order dispersed the wire of Auzon… The Oppidum of Gergovie, impregnable with its fantastic Arvernes, is behind them… It is the wandering from one camp to another between Orcet and Rock-White the, with some steps of the small city of CANONIS ACUM (Chanonat)… A few months later, Vercingétorix, the chief of the invincible warriors, capitulates with Alésia. Gaulle becomes Roman, Arvernes are treated by César as free people: they thus will build on most prestigious of the tops of Auvergne “the Puy de Dôme” a splendid temple dedicated to the god Mercure, into Gallic “Lug”. The centuries pass… Austremoine évangélise… Gregoire de Tours written… Meanwhile, and when it has of it the leisure, with a few kilometers from here, is established in its Roman villa on the edges of the Lake Aydat, Sidoine Apollinaire which is not wearied to rent us his country in the following terms “Avitacum, it is the name of my ground, we live there mine and me in a soft harmony”. But let us return to our small river, Auzon, blottie between the two old volcanic plates of the Greenhouse and Gergovie. Few villages were established along its course, if it is not Cannonagus (Chanonat).
Towards the end of the 12th century, the templiers and the hospital ones were established in Auvergne. These monks soldiers had the role of defending the holy places, of protecting and of looking after the pilgrims and of ensuring an infrastructure intended to feed the Croisades as men and silver. The constitutive instruments of various commanderies auvergnates disappeared and so it reigns of many uncertainties on the membership of the Ordre of the Temple or the Ordre of the Hospital of such or such commandery at its origin. Some of these commanderies were allotted to the templiers more by popular tradition that on the basis of historical evidence. In 1293, Jean de Trie, baillif of Auvergne, gives the name of 25 commanderies of the hospital of Midsummer's Day of Jerusalem of the diocese of Clermont. Among those Ci one finds that of Chanonat. At the beginning of the 14th Philippe century the Beautiful one irritated by the power about Templiers orders the arrest of all the members of the order. In 1312 the pope Clément V proclaims the suppression of the order then the transfer of the goods of the Temple to the Hospital. In 1313 the hospital ones of Auvergne take possession of the goods of the templiers.
Chanonat, after having belonged to the County of Auvergne, concerns the Dauphiné of Auvergne in the middle of the 12th century and in 1423, the city enters the house of the Tower of Auvergne. It will remain there until 1789. In addition to vestiges of hospital, on the commune of Chanonat one finds also many sites in charge of history: Twist, Viallevelours, Condat, Chagourdat, Varvasse, Condamine and the remarkable Masonry castle built with 15th and 17th centuries in the valley of Auzon, with its famous gardens drawn by Ours and classified Historic buildings. The doors of the strengthened village disappeared in 1746. Dismounted, their wood was used for repairs of the bell-tower. After the Revolution, it is the parcelling out of the properties, the various religious orders. The 19th century leaves us traces which we discover on the places, along the streets… here a cross, there a fountain. Many rural houses compose the city of today with an organization of buildings related to the culture of the vine and élevage.
The Phylloxéra, at the end of the 19th century destroyed most of the vineyards, now become orchards. Edmond Giscard d'Estaing, father of Valery Giscard d'Estaing was the mayor of 1932 with 1947. The commune was the place of vote of president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.
