Channel of the collieries of the Saar

The channel of the houillières of the Saar was carried out between 1861 and 1866 and borders the Alsace Bossue in the west. The presence of the carboniferous layer of Saarbrucken and of the industry of Mulhouse, large coal consumer, both relatively distant one from the other were at the origin of the creation of this channel.

The channel of the collieries of the the Saar and the channeled Saar form a water way of 105 km, including 63 km of artificial channel including/understanding 27 locks. It crosses also the ponds Lorraine tanks of Gondrexange, Mittersheim and the Stock.

Navigation is authorized with some 38 meters length boats, 5 meters of width with a draft of 1,80 meters (loading from 250 to 280 tons).

The harbor installations along the channel are numerous. In France one finds the ports of Houillons, Bissert, Rech-les-Sarralbe, Sarralbe, Remelfing, Sarreguemines, Grosbliederstroff and in Germany, the ports of Saarbrucken, Brebach, Burbach, Luisenthal, Voelklingen.
