Channel of the Margriet Princess

The Canal of the Princess Margriet (in Dutch Prinses Margrietkanaal ) is a channel Dutch of the Frise. This channel represents the way clippings of the inland waterway between the IJsselmeer and the town of Groningue.

History

Work of the connection of navigation Lemmer - Groningue started in the Années 1930. The part groningoise, called Canal Van Starkenborgh was opened with navigation as of 1938, inaugurated by the queen Wilhelmine.

The last sections of the Channel of the Margriet Princess were completed only after the Second world war, of which the part connecting Grou and the Pikmar to Aldskou. The Channel of the Margriet Princess was inaugurated in 1951.

The channel bears the name of the princess Margriet of Orange-Nassau, born in 1943, third girl of the queen Juliana and the prince Bernhard.

Geography

The channel starts to approximately 2 km in the west of Lemmer, where the lock of the Margriet Princess connects it to the IJsselmeer. From there, the channel leads to the lake of Grutte Brekken, which it crosses. The channel passes close to Spannenburg, crosses the lake De Kufûrd, then crosses the A7 by a Aqueduc with Uitwellingerga, before joining the lake of Snitser Mar.

After this lake, the channel crosses the Boarn with Aldskou, it passes above the A32 by another aqueduct to join Grou, where it crosses the Pikmar. Before Burgum, the channel borrows the Wide IE and after the village of Burgum, the channel crosses the Burgumer Mar. Then, the channel skirts Kootstertille and Gerkesklooster, to join the Frontière groningoise with Stroobos.

The channel has a 64,5 km length.
