Channel of Pannerden
The Channel of Pannerden (in Dutch: Pannerdensch Kanaal ) is a channel Dutch of the Gueldre.
The channel is located between Doornenburg and Huissen, in the south of Arnhem. Its length is of 6 km, its width of 135 meters. It connects the Canal of Bijland (which constitutes, in fact, the prolongation of the the Rhine) to the the lower Rhine. The channel was dug between 1701 and 1709 with for objective creating a Line of defense without direct connection with the Rhine and the Waal. Only a few years later, one created these connections, in order to guarantee the water supply of the IJssel and the lower Rhine. At the beginning of its existence, this connection caused many ruptures of Digue S and important Inondation S.
In addition to the economic advantage (to shorten the course of the the lower Rhine), the creation of this channel had especially an strategic importance: it ensured the water supply of the news Line of defense of Holland. The flow of the channel is approximately 700 m ³ /s. the Fort Pannerden, located at the starting point of the Waal and Channel of Pannerden, was built to guarantee the division of water.
In general, the division of Rhenish water at the first point of separation (close to Strong Pannerden, is of 2/3 towards the Waal and 1/3 towards the Channel of Pannerden. At the second point of separation, to the north of Huissen, 2/3 X 1/3 = 2/9 of Rhenish water leave towards the lower Rhine and 1/3 X 1/3 = 1/9 towards IJssel (see chart, opposite).
