The Canal of North (in Dutch Noorderkanaal ) is a channel Dutch of the Holland-Southerner, located at Rotterdam.

Geography

The channel is located in the north-eastern east/of Rotterdam. It connects the Rotterdamse Schie to the Rotte, in the prolongation of the Canal of Schie in Schie. It forms the septentrional border of the districts of Blijdorp , Bergpolder , Liskwartier and the Oude Noorden . With middle distance is the lock Bergsluis , which allows a passage of the boats having a maximum damping of 2 meters.

Nowadays, the channel is primarily used by yachtmen.

History

The first construction projects of channel already go back to 1892. The decision of construction was made on March 29th, 1906, but work started only in 1933, after the completion of the Canal of Schie in Schie. The channel was opened with the navigation in 1938.

After the destruction of the center of Rotterdam by the bombardments of the German during the Second world war, on May 14th, 1940, a great number of Péniche S were located in the Channel of North, in order to create residences. Initially envisaged like provisional dwellings, the majority of these barges always exist.
