Channel of Neufossé
This channel, of junction by derivation, 18 km length ensures the connection between the coastal river of the Aa and the river of the Lys between the communes of Surface-on-the-Lily and Saint-Omer. It crosses the town of Arques (Pas-de-Calais).
Begun in 1753, it was brought into service in 1774, and bore by the engineer of the fortifications Pierre of Buat. It was put at the Gabarit Freycinet in 1887 and at the European gauge in 1967.
It belongs to the desired infrastructure Canal the Dunkirk-Scheldt after the Second world war to develop the Field of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Before 1967, it was connected to Aa by the Ship lift of Fontinettes
