Channel of Ems

The Canal of Ems (in Dutch Eemskanaal ) is a channel Dutch of the province of Groningue.

Geography

The Channel of Ems connects the town of Groningue (the Canal Van Starkenborgh and the Winschoterdiep) with the port of Delfzijl and the mouth of the Ems (Dollard).

The channel is At the same time a inland waterway important, usable by Caboteur S., the channel is the principal course of drainage of the North-East of Drenthe (the basins slopes of the Hunze and the Drentsche Aa), as well as area of Hoogezand-Sappemeer.

The channel has a 26,5 km length and a width of 60 meters. Initially, there was not 16 Pont S. Aujourd'hui, it are not any more but 6 of them.

History

The channel was dug in 1866 and 1876. In 1963, it was widened. In 1958, a new section was built between Delfzijl and the Ems. Since, old connection is used more only for the drainage, and new connection for navigation.

Following the subsidence, caused by the extraction of the Natural gas, it was necessary to remake banks and the dams. That was done between 1993 and 1995.
