Channel of Aisne in the Marne

Physical characteristics

Channel with summit pond to the gauge Freycinet connecting the valleys of the Aisne and the the Marne.

58,109 km length, it comprises 24 lock S (17 Aisne slope and 7 Marne slope).

It connects the towns of Berry-with-Vat (Aisne) and of Condé-sur-Marne (the Marne) while passing by Rheims.

The summit pond of 11,903 m passes in underground, with only one direction of ciculation, over a 2302 m length under the mount of Billy.

It is fed by hydrants in the river the Vesle on its Aisne slope and by a pumping in the Marne at Condé-sur-Marne.

History

Completed in 1866, it was entirely rebuilt after the destruction of the First World War, during which the tunnel of the Mount of Billy was used as shelter with pieces of artillery placed on boat.
