Channel Nimy-Blaton-Fibulas

The channel Nimy-Blaton-Fibulas is a channel of Belgium which connects Nimy (close to Mons, on the level of the lake of the Big wide), to Péronnes on the level of the the Scheldt. It forms, with the channel of the Center and the Canal Brussels-Charleroi, the connection between the the Scheldt and the Meuse

The channel replaces old the Canal Pommerœul-Antoing which was open in 1826. At that time, the Borinage needed effective means of transport to deliver the enormous quantity of coal collected in the mines of the area.

Locks

The channel benefits from the weak slope of the valley of the Haine and it thus does not need many locks. It has of them only two with its junction with the the Scheldt to overcome a total difference in level of 18,10 meters. With Blaton, one also finds a door of guard which makes it possible to avoid with water from going away in the event of rupture of dam.
  • Height in Nimy: 33,80 m

  • Height with Fibulas: 15,85 m
  • Fibulas: lock of 86 m X 12 m - 12,50 m Height

  • Péronnes: lock of 86 m X 12 m - 5,60 m Height
