Chandigarh

Chandigarh (Panjâbî: ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ, Hindi: चंडीगढ़) is a new city in India which is the chief town of two States: the Panjâb and the Haryana. However, the city forms part neither of nor other; it is managed by the federal government like the territory of the Union of Chandigarh.

The first official Architecte of the city was the Suisse Le Corbusier. It is him, associated with Edwin Fry, which carries out the project for the new capital of the Panjâb in 1951. Its team carries out the urban plan while it builds Capitole, the Law courts, the Secretariat and the Palate of the Assemblies. Chandigarh is today the most important concentration of works of Corbusier.

The city is divided into several sectors, known by a number from 1 to 60. (Le Corbusier makes omit the 13 because of its supersitions.) Each sector is a square roughly 1,5 km by 1,5 km.

History

Jawâharlâl Nehrû commissioned the city in order to reflect the modernistic spirit of the new nation. Chandigarh was for him a means of not directing Indian imagination towards the future, and to the crushing poverty from which the great masses suffered.

After the distribution of Panjâb in three States (Panjâb, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh), Chandigarh remains outside the three.
