Champotón
Champotón , is a Mexican city of the State of the Campeche, located in the east of the peninsula of the Yucatán.
This agglomeration of 23 500 inhabitants in 2000 is between the more important cities of Campeche in north and Chetumal in the south.
It is the chief town of a municipality of Campeche.
History
Champotón, formerly called Chakanputun or Chanputun , was a city of the Maya empire , whose history goes back at least to the 10th century.
It was conquered by the Spaniards at the 16th century:
In 1517, the Spanish troops carried out by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba reached the village of Ah-Kim-Pech to reconstitute their water reserves. After four days of storm, they arrived at Champotón where they were attacked by the Maya troops led by Moch Couoh. The Maya victory over the Spaniards was acquired, and since then, the battle field of Champotón was called bay of the bad battle .
Geography
The saving in Champotón puts back today on fishing , the forestry development , the timber , the extraction of the gum , the culture of the coconut , of the cane with sugar , of the lawyer , the corn and the beans .
Tourism
With 50 kilometers in the south of Champotón, by the road 261 , are the caves of Assembles Cheer , with the interesting rock forms.
Geographical location
Champotón is located at the junction of the roads n° 261 and 180 , close to the mouth of the river Champoton on the Gulf of Mexico.
