Championships of the world of athletics
The Championnats of the world of athletics are the biennial competition organized by the IAAF which designates a world champion for each major discipline of the Athlétisme.
With their creation in 1983, the championships took place every four years, they take place every two years since 1991.
There exist also Championnats of the world junior of athletics which are held every two years.
History
The tests of athletics disputed at the time of the Olympic Games had a statute of championships of the world (the winners were declared by it “Olympic champions and world champions”) until the first organized championships with Helsinki in 1983. It should however be noted that, previously, of the championships of the world for the male test of the 50 km had been organized goes (in 1976) and for the female tests of the 400 meters hedges and of: 3000 meters (in 1980) (not inserted tests, respectively, with the program of the Olympic Games of Montreal and Moscow).

Merlene Ottey (JAM/SLO) is the athlete who gained the most medals (14) in front of Carl Lewis (the USA) (10), while Michael Johnson is that which gained the most gold medals (9).
In Osaka, Merlene Ottey will represent Slovenia at 47 years, with the minima B, which will make of it the oldest compétitrice of the championships.
The oldest winner is Irina Yatchenko UKR (disc) in 2003 (at 37 years and 298 days) - the most former medal-holder is Troy Douglas NED (4x100) in 2003 (at 40 years and 274 days). The youngest gold medal-holder is Merlene Frazer JAM (4x100, in series only) at 17 years and 248 days while youngest winner individual is Tirunesh Dibaba (5000m) at 18 years and 90 days. The youngest medal-holder, at 15 years and 153 days, is Sally Barsosio (10000m).
